The Law of the Silent Gentleman

Chapter 31: disagreement

"Why didn't you accept that commission?!"

Giuliano yelled at Enzo hysterically as soon as he entered the gate of the Ambrand estate. The assassin waved his hand irritably, indicating that he wanted to be alone for a while. He walked to the study, and Giuliano bit his lip and followed him resentfully.

"Aren't you the silent one? Why did you reject the client?"

"The reticent has the freedom to choose whether to accept it or not." Enzo's face was gloomy.

"I can't think of any reason for you to refuse! Isn't it just right that the client's target is Boniwell? He is my enemy and your target. I can avenge my family, and you can collect rewards, you Why not accept it?"

"This is not what I originally envisioned!"

"What's the difference?"

"I originally planned to spend a few years cultivating you into a qualified silencer, and then you will go to make enemies yourself, and I will not participate in your revenge at all."

"You're already involved! Your original plan was that I'd pay you enough to kill Fernando and Bonnieville for me, but I didn't have any money, so you changed your plan. Now someone is paying to sell Bonnie Weil's head coincides with my goal, why don't you want to?"

Enzo pushed open the study door, and then quickly closed it. Giuliano blocked the door with his foot and squeezed into the study.

"If I accept this commission and kill Boniwell, what will you need to do? You have avenged your revenge, and you will never be the Silencer!"

"I'm not just sitting around doing nothing, I'll help too! Becoming the Silencer is just a means for me to take revenge, not my goal!"

"But that's my purpose!" Enzo grabbed Giuliano's skirt and yelled uncontrollably.

Giuliano froze. He had never seen Enzo so annoyed. Enzo had always been to him a mystical symbol, a godlike idol whose every move conformed to some kind of norm that mortals could not understand, and that norm was undoubtedly full of beauty. But now Enzo broke that norm himself. Giuliano realized only now that the Reticents' garb contained real people, and they were angry, annoyed, and sad about all sorts of things. However, once they put on the mask of the reticent, they will abandon those secular emotions, abandon their human side, and become symbols full of divinity.

It never occurred to Giuliano that being the Reticent would have such a meaning.

Enzo realized his gaffe, and loosened the apprentice's skirt. For a moment, his expression was a little dazed, but it quickly returned to its original state. He pushed Giuliano away and walked out of the study. Giuliano chased after him, and he shouted impatiently: "Don't follow me!"

So Giuliano slammed the door angrily and sat down on the chair. After a while, he heard the sound of horseshoes outside the window. The sound faded away. The manor was quiet, only the breeze blowing through the treetops and the rustling of autumn leaves.

Someone knocked on the door. Giuliano was still sulking, not saying a word. The people outside opened the door on their own. It's Bernard the butler. He was carrying a wooden tray with a glass of iced mint julep on it. He bowed and put the glass in front of Giuliano. Giuliano wanted to say "I don't want to drink", but he was so angry that he simply picked up the glass and drank it down. The mint liquor poured into his stomach like an icy waterfall, making him cough, and for a moment, he felt that the alcohol made him more angry, but as time went on, the anger was suppressed by the cold drink.

"Where's Enzo?" he asked the butler.

"Just rode away."

"Where did he go?"

"The old man doesn't know either."

Giuliano thought sullenly, where else could he go? When people are angry, they just find a deserted place to stay. He didn't want to chase them out foolishly. He himself needs to be quiet!

He told Bernard to prepare dinner and bring it to the bedroom, and then he went back to the room and threw himself on the soft and comfortable feather bed. He couldn't understand what Enzo was thinking. Boniwell is his sworn enemy and the target of the client. They can work together, he avenges, Enzo receives the reward, each takes what they need, killing two birds with one stone. So what if he doesn't become the Silent One? He didn't intend to be a shady killer for the rest of his life. The Reticent is just a stage in his life. When his family is avenged, he will become the new patriarch of the Sacon family and lead the family to revival. Why did Enzo insist on dragging him into the ranks of the silent ones?

Enzo didn't come back all day. The next day, Giuliano calmed down a little. After thinking about it, he felt that Enzo might have placed some kind of hope on him, just like a teacher always hopes that students will inherit their careers. He should have made it clear earlier, so that Enzo would not have unnecessary expectations of him. His life is still so long, he never thought that he would be an assassin all his life. If he were to withdraw from the ranks of the Reticents, he would feel a little sorry for Enzo. If possible, it would be best to balance the two, but is it possible to manage the family business and kill people at the same time?

Giuliano didn't want to practice swordsmanship or read a book, so he sat in the courtyard all morning in a daze. He sometimes thought that it would be great if he hadn’t met that client. Anyway, no one dared to accept his commission, and Boniwell could survive for a few more years. It would be too late for him to take the head of Governor Vanessa after he became the silent one. If it was too late, he would not argue with Enzo; sometimes he felt that Enzo was simply making trouble out of no reason, this entrustment was a perfect opportunity, it was simply fate that pushed them to the forefront, he refused to accept it, it was simply crazy.

After spending the morning in a daze, Bernard, the housekeeper, called him to eat. The restaurant was empty, and he was the only one eating. It's weird, there were only Enzo and him in the past, why did he never feel that the restaurant was so empty and deserted? Even the meals are tasteless. Giuliano understood that it was not the decline in the level of chefs in the manor, but the problem was his own.

"Did Enzo say when he would be back?" Giuliano asked the steward.

"No." Bernard replied.

"What did he take with him when he left?"

"I didn't bring anything. You two just came back, before the groom had time to unload the luggage, Master Enzo left on horseback, so you should only bring the horse and the original luggage."

"Which way is he going?"

"The old man didn't see it."

"Someone must have seen it! For example, grooms and servants! Go and ask!"

Bernard stepped back. In the afternoon he reported to Giuliano that the groom had seen Enzo go north. But the north is so big, where will he go? Will he be in any danger? No... just a joke, how could Enzo be in danger, he is so powerful, only those who meet him will be in danger...

On the third day, Giuliano got up together and had no time to wash up, so he asked Bernard Enzo if he was back. Bernard replied no. So Giuliano was in a low mood all day, unable to do anything. On several occasions, he wished he could ride his horse and follow Enzo's trail, but that was tantamount to finding a needle in a haystack. Besides, what if they happened to miss it on the way?

He can only spend day after day listlessly, no matter whether it is practicing sword, reading, or even visiting the nearby towns, he has no interest. It wasn't until another week passed that he suddenly realized that Enzo might never come back again.

He and Enzo have fundamental differences in their wishes. How will Enzo feel when he finds out that he is not his ideal disciple? The client would definitely not agree to let Enzo train him for a few years first, and then carry out the assassination plan after he can take charge of himself. But Giuliano urged Enzo to accept the commission, but he was against his will, and the result was that Enzo ran away from home.

Is Enzo disappointed? Did she abandon him, never want to take this muddy water again, and fly away from now on?

If he wants revenge, can he only rely on himself? He is far from being an assassin. He can only be said to be a half-baked apprentice. With his ability, how can he assassinate Governor Vanessa?

He can't do it. But he has to do it. He couldn't wait in this manor. Since Enzo was unwilling to help him, he could only rely on himself.

Giuliano immediately ordered Bernard to pack his bags and prepare his horses. Once ready, he sets out, returns home, and faces his enemies. Bernard seemed to see that he was determined to go, so he made preparations very quickly. In less than half a day, the necessities for the trip were packed and the horses were ready. Giuliano cleaned up the "classroom" by himself, and put the various books back on the bookshelf in the study. Every time I play a book, a memory about Enzo will come to my mind. When talking about this "Expedition", Enzo laughed at the scholars who wrote the book; when talking about the "Ancient Grammar", Enzo praised him for his solid foundation and almost no need to teach anything... What made Giuliano the most Sentimental is the work of Alice Iniesta. Enzo Lang has read every one of them. Every time he put one of them back on the bookshelf, Giuliano would always think of Enzo's clear voice, pouring his heart like a cup of sweet wine. He could never hear that beautiful voice again.

Giuliano was on the verge of tears.

"Master! Master Giuliano!"

Bernard's voice interrupted Giuliano's sentimentality. The old butler entered the study at some point, but he didn't notice it at all.

"What's wrong?" Giuliano lowered his head, preventing the old butler from seeing the tears in his eyes.

"There is a man riding a horse from the northern road to the manor." Bernard said, "I am old and my eyesight is blurry, so I can't see the appearance of that man clearly. Do you..."

Before he could finish, Giuliano rushed out of the study. There is a terrace on the top floor of the manor with a good view and a panoramic view of the surrounding scenery. Giuliano stepped onto the terrace, and at the same time, he heard the rapid sound of horses' hoofs approaching from afar.

He looks north. A rider is riding along the road north of the estate, past the shepherd's flocks, across the wooden bridges that fly over the river, and across the windswept fields. The autumn sun fell on his flying blond hair like a waving silk banner. There was no way Giuliano would admit he was wrong.

Enzo is back.
